An underwater volcano off the coast of Hawaii isforming a new HawaiianIslands!

Lo'ihi Seamount is an undersea volcanolocated about 22 miles off the coast of Hawaii. It is the newest addition to the Hawaiian Emperor Seamount Chain, a string of volcanoes that stretch over 3600 miles.

The Lo'ihi Seamount began forming 400 000 years ago, and is expected to peak it’s head out in about 10 000-100 000 years from now. In the meantime, it’s slowly expanding Hawaii’s land. It has also been known to cause several major Earthquakes, one of which lastedseveral months.

Almost like a living organism, this volcano has been growing at a constant rate. Yes it’s expanding the Hawaiian territories now, but one day itcan completely drown it in a sea of molten rock and lava.

Coffee was discovered by a Goat!

Coffee was discovered by a Goat!

Coffee was first discovered in Eastern Africa in an area we know today as Ethiopia. A popular legend refers to a goat herder by the name of Kaldi, who observed his goats acting unusually frisky after eating berries from a bush. Curious about this phenomenon, Kaldi tried eating the berries himself. He found that these berries gave him a renewed energy. The news of this energy laden fruit quickly spread throughout the region.

The Honeybee’s Final Sting...

The Honeybee’s Final Sting...

Amazing World
If you’ve ever wondered why honeybees tend to die after stinging someone this picture says it all. In an incredible capture by Kathy Keatley Garvey, a UC Davis Communications Specialist in the Department of Enomology, we see a bee stinging a person’s arm and then attempting to fly away as the stinger remains lodged in the victim. That trail of goo you see? It’s actually the bee’s abdominal tissue.  The remarkable capture netted Garvey the first- place gold feature photo award in an Association for Communication Excellence competition.

On the fortunate timing, Garvey said she was walking with a friend and a bee came close to him and started buzzing in a high-pitch.

She said that’s normally a telltale sign that a bee’s about to sting, so she readied her camera and snapped four photos.

William Trubridge, 31-year-old freediver from New Zealand, had successfully dived 125 meters below sea level near the Bahamas, who also became the world’s best freediver. William Trubridge learned to swim when he’s 18 months old, 8-year-old he can dive 15 meters, until the age of 22 he began to start professional training. He held the world record for free diving in one breath.

A Whole New Meaning to Tea-Bagging!

A Whole New Meaning to Tea-Bagging!

A student from Benfield School in Newcastle Upon Tyne has been expelled for putting his testicles in a teacher’s mug and posting a photograph of the prank on the internet.

The unsuspecting female teacher drunk from the cup afterwards and when she discovered what had happened was so distraught that she took time off work. It’s understood that she has now returned.

One source said: ‘The photo was of the lad dangling his balls inside the cup belonging to the teacher.

‘She later drank her tea from it.’

An investigation by the school revealed the boy who took the cup had been urging friends on Facebook to dare him to carry out bad-taste pranks.

It is another example of the growing phenomenon of pupils using social networking sites to bully, abuse teachers or boast about misbehaviour in class.

Another source said: ‘The boys saw the cup, in a classroom, which they then took.

‘They did the deed in the corridor. It all came from one of them on Facebook asking his friends: “Who dares me to do this?”’

Three other pupils have been suspended over the incident.

The Creators of Adidas and Puma were brothers and Nazis:

The Creators of Adidas and Puma were brothers and Nazis:

Adolf “Adi” Dassler started and Rudolph “Rudi” Dassler started a line of sports shoes in Germany in 1924. They both joined the Nazi Party when Hitler rose to power. Rudi was drafted to fight in WWII and was captured by Allied forces. American soldiers suspected him of being a member of the SS (Hitler’s paramilitary force), and Rudi was convinced that his brother, Adi, had ratted him out.

Due to irreconcilable differences between the two brothers the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory fell apart in 1948. Adi went on to start his own line of shoes, “Adidas” (based on his name, Adi Dassler). Rudi started his own line of shoes, “Puma”, named after the German word for “Panther”.

The First Telephone Call - March 10, 1876:

The First Telephone Call - March 10, 1876:

What were the first words ever spoken on the telephone? They were spoken by Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, when he made the first call on March 10, 1876, to his assistant, Thomas Watson: "Mr. Watson--come here--I want to see you."

Bell's first telephone call was so famous, he repeated the phrase in 1915 in the formal opening of the completed transcontinental telephone lines connecting America's East and West coasts. But this time Watson replied that it would take him a week; he was on the other end of the line in San Francisco.

What would you have said on the first call?

Carrots use to be Purple

Carrots use to be Purple

The modern day orange carrot wasn’t cultivated until Dutch growers in the late 16th century took mutant strains of the purple carrot, including yellow and white carrots, and gradually developed them into the sweet, plump, orange variety we have today. Before this, pretty much all carrots were purple with mutated versions occasionally popping up including yellow and white carrots, among others.

Untidy beds may keep us healthy

Untidy beds may keep us healthy

Failing to make your bed in the morning may actually help keep you healthy, scientists believe. Research suggests that while an unmade bed may look scruffy it is also unappealing to house dust mites thought to cause asthma and other allergies.

A Kingston University study discovered the bugs cannot survive in the warm, dry conditions found in an unmade bed.

The average bed could be home to up to 1.5 million house dust mites.

The bugs, which are less than a millimetre long, feed on scales of human skin and produce allergens which are easily inhaled during sleep.

The warm, damp conditions created in an occupied bed are ideal for the creatures, but they are less likely to thrive when moisture is in shorter supply.

THE LARGEST JELLYFISH IN THE WORLD

THE LARGEST JELLYFISH IN THE WORLD

The Lions Mane Jellyfish is the largest jellyfish in the world. They have been swimming in arctic waters since before the dinosaurs (over 650 million years ago) and are among some of the oldest surviving species in the world.

The largest can come in at about 6 meters and has tentacles over 50 meters long. Pretty amazing when you think these things have been swimming around for so long. They have hundreds of poisonous tentacles that it used to catch passing by fish. it then slowly drags in it’s prey and eats it. That is terrifying.

HOT WATER FREEZES MORE FASTER THAN COLD WATER !!!!

HOT WATER FREEZES MORE FASTER THAN COLD WATER !!!!

The hot water freezes faster than cold water. This means that the hot water's temperature is more likely to cool to temperatures below zero degrees Celsius. In the cold non-supercooled water, ice crystals form and float to the top, forming a sheet of ice over the top of the water, creating an insulating layer between the cooler air and the water. This ice sheet also stops evaporation. In the hot water that has become supercooled (thus, no longer hot) the water, when it does freeze, freezes throughout, creating more or less of a slush before freezing solid.

Why is hot water more likely to be supercooled? Because hot water is less likely to contain tiny gas bubbles. Gas bubbles form from dissolved gasses as the water cools. When the hot water was heated, these dissolved gasses may have been driven out. In cold water, ice crystals use the tiny bubbles as starting points for formation (in physics, we call them nucleation points). But in the hot water, there are no bubbles, so there aren't as many starting points for the ice crystals.

Mango Facts

10 Health Benefits of Mangoes...!!
Mangos taste so good that people forget they are also healthy! Discover how the “king of fruits” can help you.

Health Benefits:

1. Prevents Cancer:
Research has shown antioxidant compounds in mango fruit have been found to protect against colon, breast, leukemia and prostate cancers. These compounds include quercetin, isoquercitrin, astragalin, fisetin, gallic acid and methylgallat, as well as the abundant enzymes.

2. Lowers Cholesterol:
The high levels of fiber, pectin and vitamin C help to lower serum cholesterol levels, specifically Low-Density Lipoprotein (the bad stuff)

3. Clears the Skin:
Can be used both internally and externally for the skin. Mangos clear clogged pores and eliminate pimples. (Read more on page 5.)

4. Eye Health:
One cup of sliced mangoes supplies 25 percent of the needed daily value of vitamin A, which promotes good eyesight and prevents night blindness and dry eyes.

5. Alkalizes the Whole Body:
The tartaric acid, malic acid, and a trace of citric acid found in the fruit help to maintain the alkali reserve of the body.

6. Helps in Diabetes:
Mango leaves help normalize insulin levels in the blood. The traditional home remedy involves boiling leaves in water, soaking through the night and then consuming the filtered decoction in the morning. Mango fruit also have a relatively low glycemic index (41-60) so moderate quantities will not spike your sugar levels.

7. Improved Sex:
Mangoes are a great source of vitamin E. Even though the popular connection between sex drive and vitamin E was originally created by a mistaken generalization on rat studies, further research has shown balanced proper amounts (as from whole food) does help in this area.

8. Improves Digestion:
Papayas are not the only fruit that contain enzymes for breaking down protein. There are several fruits, including mangoes, which have this healthful quality. The fiber in mangoes also helps digestion and elimination.

9. Remedy for Heat Stroke
Juicing the fruit from green mango and mixing with water and a sweetener helps to cool down the body and prevent harm to the body. From an ayurvedic viewpoint, the reason people often get diuretic and exhausted when visiting equatorial climates is because the strong “sun energy” is burning up your body, particularly the muscles. The kidneys then become overloaded with the toxins from this process.

10. Boosts Immune system
The generous amounts of vitamin C and vitamin A in mangoes, plus 25 different kinds of carotenoids keep your immune system healthy and strong.

Dengue Killer Found in Humans

Dengue Killer Found in Humans

Friday, 22 June 2012 - A team of research scientists have uncovered a human antibody that can neutralize and kill the dengue virus within two hours. A way to reproduce this antibody in large quantities has also been identified, potentially opening the door to a cure for dengue infected patients.

The researchers identified a recombinant antibody that could attach itself strongly to a specific part of the dengue virus and inhibit it from attacking other cells.

This discovery was made by a combined team from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and the Defence Medical & Environmental Research Institute at DSO National Laboratories (DMERI@DSO) with funding from the Singapore National Research Foundation under its Singapore NRF Fellowship, National Medical Research Council and DR Tech.

It often rains diamonds on Uranus and Neptune!! ...

These planets contain a high proportion of methane, which UC Berkeley researchers have now shown can turn into diamond at the high temperatures and pressures found inside these planets.

"Once these diamonds form, they fall like raindrops or hailstones toward the center of the planet," said Laura Robin Benedetti, a graduate student in physics at UC Berkeley.

If experiments at the University of California, Berkeley, are any indication, future explorers of our solar system may well find diamonds hailing down through the atmospheres of Neptune and Uranus.

The team, led by Benedetti and Raymond Jeanloz, professor of geology and geophysics, produced these conditions inside a diamond anvil cell, squeezing liquid methane to several hundred thousand times atmospheric pressure. When they focused a laser beam on the pressurized liquid, heating it to some 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, diamond dust appeared.

They report their experimental findings in a paper in the Oct. 1 issue of Science.

The demonstration that methane can convert to diamond as well as other complex hydrocarbons in the interiors of giant planets like Neptune hint at a complex chemistry inside gaseous planets and even brown dwarf stars. Brown dwarfs are small, dim stars barely larger than the largest gas giant planets.

"This is opening the door to study of the interesting types of chemical reactions taking place inside planets and brown dwarfs," Jeanloz said. "Now that technology is able to reproduce the high pressures and temperatures found there, we are getting much better quality information on the chemical reactions taking place under these conditions."

"It is not amazing that chemistry like this happens inside planets, it's just that most people haven't dealt with the chemical reactions that can occur," Benedetti said. "The interior of these planets may be much more complicated that our current picture."

STUNNING FACTS ABOUT UNIVERSE :)

STUNNING FACTS ABOUT UNIVERSE :)

The universe is vast and amazing. It is estimated that the universe is between 12 and 14 billion years old. Scientists still don't know quite how large the universe is, although many believe it to be endless. The following amazing space facts, however, are less well known tidbits about our universe.

1. There are more than 8,000 objects orbiting the earth. Many of the objects are referred to as orbital debris or "space junk". More than 2,500 of those objects are satellites.

2. Saturn's rings are not solid. Although they appear to be thin, solid rings that surround the planet, Saturn's rings are actually particles of ice, dust and rock. The particles range from the size of a grain of sand to larger than skyscraper buildings.

3. Other planets have rings too. Saturn's rings are the only ones visible from Earth.

4. Mercury, the small rocky planet closest to the Sun, has almost no atmosphere to keep it warm. Because of this, temperatures can reach as high as 800 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and as low as -300 degrees Fahrenheit at night.

5. A tablespoon of neutron star would weigh about ten billion tones.

6. The Sun and the entire solar system revolve around the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

7. The cost of a spacesuit is about $11 million dollars.

8. The red color of Mars comes from the rusted iron in its soil.

9. Jupiter has no surface for a spacecraft to land on. It's comprised mostly from helium gas and hydrogen.

10. Winds at Saturn's equator are nearly five times stronger than the winds of a hurricane on Earth. Unlike a hurricane, the winds on Saturn never die down.

11. Because of the strange rotation of Uranus, once the Sun comes up it doesn't set for 42 years. When it does finally set, it is then dark for 42 years.

12. The Sun makes up 99.86% of the solar system's mass. The Sun has sunspots, the dark spots on the Sun’s photosphere (surface), 2000°C cooler than the rest of the surface.

13. Saturn has such a low density that it would float in water.

14. Saturn's moon, Titan, is larger than the planet Mercury.

15. If you look at the farthest star that can be seen, you are peering 4 million years into the past. It takes the light from the farthest star that long to reach Earth.

16. Jupiter is so large that all planets in the solar system could fit inside of it.

17. Solar flares reach temperatures of 10 million °C and have the energy of a million atom bomb...:o

18. A person that weighs 100 pounds on Earth would weigh 264 pounds on Jupiter.

19. There are more stars than there are grains of sand on Earth.

20. A comet's tail always points away from the Sun.

SPIDER-MAN LIZARD !!!! THAT'S WEIRD AND AWESOME!!

SPIDER-MAN LIZARD !!!! THAT'S WEIRD AND AWESOME!!

The lizard in the photo is not being manipulated. It is now the latest exotic pet craze. Mwanza flat-headed agama's vivid blue-and-red colouring, is a lizard that has a body skin colour similar to Spiderman. Agamas, which are native to Kenya can be good pets, as they become tame and docile if handled regularly.

It can grow up to a foot long, and a balanced diet for them includes locusts, crickets, meal worms and wax worms. They are unable to throw webs, but can change colour – the brightly coloured males will change brown at night or if frightened. They can also run on their hind legs, and can scale vertical walls like spiders.

NASA scientists have discovered watermolecules in the polar regions of the Moon. Instruments aboard three separate spacecraft revealed water molecules in amounts that are greater than predicted, but still relatively small. Hydroxyl, a molecule consisting of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom, also was found in the lunar soil.
The observations were made by NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper, or M 3 ("M-cubed"), aboard the Indian Space Research Organization's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft. NASA's Cassini spacecraft and NASA's Epoxi spacecraft have confirmed the find

TOP 10 COOL FACTS ABOUT SPACE !!!!

TOP 10 COOL FACTS ABOUT SPACE !!!!

1.COLD WELDING

Fact: If two pieces of metal touch in space, they become permanently stuck together.

This may sound unbelievable, but it is true. Two pieces of metal without any coating on them will form in to one piece in the vacuum of space. This doesn’t happen on earth because the atmosphere puts a layer of oxidized material between the surfaces. This might seem like it would be a big problem on the space station but as most tools used there have come from earth, they are already coated with material. In fact, the only evidence of this seen so far has been in experiments designed to provoke the reaction. This process is called cold welding.

2.SUNSPOT MUSIC

Fact: Sunspot activity may be the primary reason for the beautiful sound of Stradivarius violins.

Antonio Stradivari is considered to be the greatest violin maker ever. He lived in Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. Scientists have been unable to work out what it is about his violins that makes them so incredible, but they do know that the timber used to make them is a very important contributing factor. From the 1500s to 1800s, the earth underwent a little ice age mostly due to increased volcanic activity and decreased solar activity (this is called the Maunder Minimum). As a result of this cooling, the types of trees that Stradivari used for his violins were particularly hard (due to slow growth). Hard timber is especially good when making violins. It is very probable that had Stradivari lived in a different age, his violins would not be prized as they are today. This picture above is made of three overlapping photos. It shows the rings in the spruce tree used to make the most famous Stradivarius violin, the “Messiah.” The first row of numbers gives the width of each ring in millimeters (one mm is about the thickness of a fingernail). The bottom row gives the years in which each ring grew.

3.EXTRA MOONS

Fact: Earth has at least 4 moons.

In 1986, Duncan Waldron discovered a asteroid (5km across) that is in an elliptic orbit around the sun with a period of revolution virtually identical to that of Earth. For this reason the planetoid and earth appear to be following each other. The periodic planetoid is named Cruithne (pronounced krin-yÉ™) after an ancient group of Scottish people (also known as the Picts). Because of its unusual relationship with Earth, it is sometimes referred to as Earth’s second moon. Cruithne, is fainter than Pluto and would require at least a 12.5 inch reflecting telescope to attempt to be seen. Since its discovery, at least three other similar asteroids have been discovered. These types of objects are also found in similar relationships to other planets in our Solar System. In the image above (courtesy of Paul Wiegert), the earth is the blue circle with a cross in it, and Cruithne’s orbit is shown in yellow.

4.GEORGE’S STAR

Fact: Uranus was originally called George’s Star.

When Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781, he was given the honor of naming it. He chose to name it Georgium Sidus (George’s Star) after his new patron, King George III (Mad King George). This is what he said:
In the fabulous ages of ancient times the appellations of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were given to the Planets, as being the names of their principal heroes and divinities. In the present more philosophical era it would hardly be allowable to have recourse to the same method and call it Juno, Pallas, Apollo or Minerva, for a name to our new heavenly body. The first consideration of any particular event, or remarkable incident, seems to be its chronology: if in any future age it should be asked, when this last-found Planet was discovered? It would be a very satisfactory answer to say, ‘In the reign of King George the Third.’

Uranus was also the first planet to be discovered with the use of a telescope.

5.THE BIG DIPPER IS NOT A CONSTELLATION

Fact: The Big Dipper is not a constellation, it is an asterism.

Many people consider the big dipper to be a constellation but, in fact, it is an asterism. An asterism is a pattern of stars in the sky which is not one of the official 88 constellations; they are also composed of stars which are not physically related to each other and can be vast distances apart. An asterism can be composed of stars from one or more constellations – in the case of the Big Dipper, it is composed entirely of the seven brightest stars in the Ursa Major (Great Bear) constellation.

6.SOLAR DIET

Fact: The Sun loses up to a billion kilograms a second due to solar winds.

Solar winds are charged particles that are ejected from the upper surface of the sun due to the high temperature of the corona and the high kinetic energy particles gain through a process that is not well understood at this time. Also, did you know that 1 pinhead of the sun’s energy is enough to kill a person at a distance of 160 kilometers.

7.ANCIENT LIGHT

Fact: The light hitting the earth right now is 30 thousand years old

The energy in the sunlight we see today started out in the core of the Sun 30,000 years ago – it spent most of this time passing through the dense atoms that make the sun and just 8 minutes to reach us once it had left the Sun! The temperature at the core of the sun is 13,600,000 kelvins. All of the energy produced by fusion in the core must travel through many successive layers to the solar photosphere before it escapes into space as sunlight or kinetic energy of particles.

8.FAREWELL OLD FRIEND!

Fact: The moon is drifting away from Earth.

Every year the moon moves about 3.8cm further away from the Earth. This is caused by tidal effects. Consequently, the earth is slowing in rotation by about 0.002 seconds per day per century. Scientists do not know how the moon was created, but the generally accepted theory suggests that a large Mars sized object hit the earth causing the Moon to splinter off.

9.CONSTANTLY MOVING

Fact: We are moving through space at the rate of 530km a second.

Our Galaxy – the Milky Way is spinning at a rate of 225 kilometers per second. In addition, the galaxy is travelling through space at the rate of 305 kilometers per second. This means that we are traveling at a total speed of 530 kilometers (330 miles) per second. That means that in one minute you are about 19 thousand kilometers away from where you were. Scientists do not all agree on the speed with which the Milky Way is travelling – estimates range from 130 – 1,000 km/s. It should be said that Einstein’s theory of relativity, the velocity of any object through space is not meaningful.

10.LIGHTWEIGHT

Fact: If you put Saturn in water it would float.

The density of Saturn is so low that if you were to put it in a giant glass of water it would float. The actual density of Saturn is 0.687 g/cm3 while the density of water is 0.998 g/cm3. At the equator Saturn has a radius of 60,268 ± 4 km – which means you would need an extremely large glass of water to test this out.
